A flat tire rarely happens at a convenient time. It may hit during a commute, while hauling equipment, or on a busy highway where traffic leaves little room for error. Knowing how to fix a flat tire safely starts with protecting yourself, your passengers, and other drivers before you ever touch a lug wrench.

For a passenger vehicle with a usable spare, a roadside tire change can get you moving again. But a temporary spare is not a permanent repair, and some situations – especially highway breakdowns, damaged sidewalls, trucks, trailers, and commercial vehicles – call for professional roadside service instead.

How to Fix a Flat Tire Safely: Secure the Scene First

Do not stop abruptly as soon as you notice a flat. Ease off the accelerator, hold the steering wheel firmly, turn on your hazard lights, and slow down gradually. If the tire has not completely come apart, driving a short distance at low speed may be safer than stopping in an active traffic lane.

Look for level, solid ground away from moving traffic. A parking lot, wide paved shoulder, rest area, or side street is far safer than a narrow highway shoulder. Avoid soft gravel, mud, slopes, bridges, and blind curves. Your jack needs stable ground, and passing traffic needs enough space to clear your vehicle.

Once stopped, put the vehicle in park and apply the parking brake. For a manual transmission, place it in first gear or reverse. Turn the wheels away from traffic if you are on the shoulder. If you have wheel chocks, place them against the tire diagonally opposite the flat. For example, chock a rear tire when changing a front tire.

If you are on the 401, 407, QEW, or another high-speed road with limited clearance, be realistic about the risk. It is often smarter to remain inside the vehicle with seat belts on, if the vehicle is safely out of traffic, and arrange roadside assistance. No tire change is worth standing close to fast-moving vehicles.

Confirm You Have the Right Equipment

Before lifting the vehicle, check the spare tire. A spare that is flat, badly cracked, or missing cannot help you. Most vehicles need a jack, lug wrench, spare tire, and the vehicle owner’s manual to identify the correct jack points. A flashlight, gloves, reflective vest, warning triangles, tire pressure gauge, and wheel chocks make the job safer.

Do not improvise with blocks, bricks, or an unstable jack. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack. If the tire is on a trailer or work vehicle, make sure you understand its lifting points and weight requirements. Heavy-duty wheels, dual-wheel setups, and loaded trailers require different equipment and more caution than a standard passenger car.

Inspect the Damage Before You Begin

A nail or screw in the tread may leave the tire looking mostly intact. A shredded tread, torn sidewall, bent wheel, or tire that has been driven flat is a different situation. Do not attempt to plug a sidewall injury or reinstall a tire that has obvious structural damage.

Also look for the cause of the flat around the vehicle. A pothole, curb strike, road debris, or damaged wheel may mean the spare is only part of the solution. If the wheel is bent or suspension components appear damaged, driving on a spare could create a bigger safety issue.

Loosen the Lug Nuts Before Raising the Vehicle

Remove the hubcap or wheel cover if necessary, then use the lug wrench to loosen each lug nut about one-quarter to one-half turn. Turn counterclockwise. The vehicle must still be on the ground while you do this, because the tire’s contact with the pavement keeps the wheel from spinning.

Lug nuts can be very tight, particularly if they were installed with an impact gun. Use steady pressure rather than jumping on the wrench or forcing it at an unsafe angle. If you cannot loosen a lug nut without excessive force, stop and call for help. A slipped wrench can cause an injury, and damaged lug nuts can complicate the repair.

Position the Jack at the Approved Lift Point

Your owner’s manual shows the reinforced jack points, usually located along the frame or pinch weld near each wheel. Position the jack only at the approved point. Lifting under a body panel, floor pan, axle component, or suspension arm can damage the vehicle or allow it to shift unexpectedly.

Raise the vehicle slowly until the flat tire is about two inches off the ground. Keep everyone clear of the vehicle while it is lifted. If the jack leans, sinks, slips, or makes the vehicle feel unstable, lower the vehicle immediately and reassess the location.

Replace the Flat Tire Carefully

Finish removing the lug nuts and set them somewhere clean where they will not roll away. Pull the wheel straight toward you. Tires can be heavier than expected, so keep your back straight and lift with your legs if you need to move it.

Align the spare tire with the wheel studs and push it fully onto the hub. Start each lug nut by hand to avoid cross-threading. Once every nut is threaded, tighten them lightly in a star pattern. This pattern helps center the wheel and applies pressure evenly.

Lower the vehicle until the spare touches the ground and will not spin, then tighten the lug nuts again in the same star pattern. Lower the vehicle completely, remove the jack, and perform a final tightening. The proper torque specification is listed in your owner’s manual. A torque wrench is the most accurate way to finish the job, since overtightening can damage studs and undertightening can allow the wheel to loosen.

Put the flat tire, jack, and tools back in the vehicle. Do not leave equipment on the shoulder. Before driving away, check that the spare appears properly seated and that no warning lights or unusual noises are present.

Treat a Temporary Spare as Temporary

Many compact spares are designed for short-distance, low-speed use only. Follow the speed limit printed on the tire or in the owner’s manual, which is often 50 mph or less. Avoid long highway trips, hard braking, heavy loads, towing, and aggressive cornering.

A full-size spare may offer more capability, but it still needs the correct air pressure and should match the vehicle’s wheel and tire specifications. On all-wheel-drive vehicles, tire diameter differences can affect the drivetrain. In those cases, prompt tire service matters even more.

Have the damaged tire inspected as soon as possible. A puncture in the repairable tread area may be repairable from the inside using the proper patch-and-plug method. A tire with sidewall damage, a large puncture, internal damage from being driven flat, or exposed cords should be replaced.

When Not to Change a Tire Yourself

Roadside tire changes are not always the right call. Contact a professional if you are too close to traffic, do not have a spare, lack the correct tools, cannot loosen the lug nuts, or are unsure where to place the jack. The same applies when a tire has blown apart, a wheel is damaged, or weather and visibility are poor.

Commercial drivers and trailer operators should be especially cautious.
